A Pace For Everyone
Meet the run leaders
Debbie Newson
Hi! My name is Debbie and I started running age 42. I signed up for the London Marathon (I wasn't a runner) and thought I'd better start training. I began to love running, particularly in such a beautiful part of the country, and wanted to run with others, so a few of us set up Budleigh Runners! I love the freedom running brings, and the chance to get away for a few hours in the wilderness and just run! I love our club because we include everyone, we never want to leave anyone behind, and it's great seeing everyone running around Budleigh in our Sapphire shirts! We just want everyone to be able to get out and have fun, whilst getting some exercise. I run all distances, fast or slow.
Deborah Allan
My name is Deborah and I have been running for more than thirty years. Over the years I have done many half marathons and 10k races all around the country. The photo was taken after the London Landmarks Half Marathon with a Chelsea Pensioner! These days I enjoy running with the club and going out on my own for longer runs. I’m from Budleigh and think it’s amazing that we have such a friendly, inclusive club right on our doorstep. You’ll find me leading the 35-40 minute group or trying to keep up in the faster groups.
Sarah and Gary Gates
I have been running on and off most of my life, have run half marathon and couple of 10k. I enjoy being out with other runners and always makes me feel good afterwards, either running whole time or the occasional walking bit...Gary started running with BR after lock down and enjoys the trail runs, as do I. We have been married for 37yrs, ' those that run together, stay together'...

Helen Pratt
Hi, I’m Helen. I moved to Devon in 1999 to train as a nurse. I now work at the RD&E.
I am married to Steve and we have 2 boys. I started running after my first son was born in 2008. I love running to keep fit and enjoy running locally to enjoy our amazing scenery. I have done a few half marathons and also did a metric marathon. Hoping to do a full marathon at some point in the future. I have been with Budleigh Runners since the club started and love being a part of the group.
Joe Cooke
I’m Joe (Joanne) Cooke and have been running for about 13 years on and off. I’m married with two sons, quite how they have got to 24 and 20 years old I dont know!!!
My running started as a weight loss journey about 13 years ago and I fell in love with the ability to relax, switch off and challenge myself.
I have progressed so much and through injury and some surgery I’m still going strong and enjoying it more than ever.
I have ran The Grizzly twice, numerous half marathons and 10km events, a couple
of Ultra events and two Marathons. One of my biggest challenges to date was running The London Marathon last year as a guide for my friend who is partially sighted.
Richard Coates
I picked up my love of running from Military service. I have run the London marathon twice and enjoy combining holidays with a organised run across numerous countries in the world. I really love the social aspect of running with like minded people and it allows me to eat and drink the things I like.
Karl Griffiths
I loved running cross country, 800m and 1,500 metres at school. Although I was injury prone as I turned the effort to 11 on each run. After 8+ year hiatus, I rediscovered running after reading Born to Run and learning how to listen to my body. I enjoy running the social side of running and helping others push for a PB.
